SENTIENT lounge chairs and armchairs are designed as objects you notice. Each model begins as an original concept in our Brooklyn studio, shaped by ideas from sculpture, architecture, and the natural forms of the wood itself. Pieces like the Wave Chaise, the Caribou Lounge, and the Sapience Chair reflect a design point of view that runs through the entire collection. Built in solid American hardwoods with commercial-grade upholstery, these are chairs made to be looked at and lived in.

The Wave Chaise Lounge

The Wave began as a study in movement. Its undulating form draws on the rhythm of ocean currents, creating a silhouette that shifts depending on your angle. Handcrafted in our Brooklyn workshop in solid American hardwood with sculpted cushioning, the Wave works in residential living rooms, hotel lobbies, and gallery spaces. It is one of the most recognized pieces in the SENTIENT collection.

Materials and Construction

Every lounge chair is built in our Brooklyn workshop using the same materials and techniques we bring to all SENTIENT furniture. The frame, finish, and upholstery are fully customizable.

Frame options

Frames are built in American black walnut, maple, white oak, cherry, or ash. Metal bases are available in steel, brass, or blackened iron, in any profile or thickness.

Finishes

Solid wood frames are hand-finished with oil, varnish, lacquer, or polyurethane. Specialty finishes include charred (shou sugi ban), spalted, ceruse, and gold leaf. The finish choice determines both the look and the durability of the frame.

Custom upholstery

We use commercial-grade leather and natural fabrics with high double-rub counts and fire-retardant ratings. Our custom upholstery program covers COM (customer’s own material) as well as our in-house fabric and leather library. Stitching techniques include channeling, tufting, and blind stitch.

Ergonomic seating

Comfort is designed in, not added afterward. Seat depth, back angle, and armrest height are calibrated for each model. Foam densities and webbing systems are selected for the intended use, whether residential or high-traffic commercial.

Lead time and delivery

Custom lounge chairs take 10-12 weeks from design approval. The process starts with a collaborative review of your design brief, followed by a 3D model for approval before production begins. We ship locally across the Northeast and work with vetted carriers for nationwide and international delivery.

Custom armchairs for luxury residential
and upscale hospitality projects

We collaborate with architects and interior designers on residential and hospitality projects to create custom armchairs. Every element is adjustable: frame material, dimensions, upholstery, arm style, and leg profile. We work from your sketches, reference images, or original SENTIENT designs to develop a model that fits the project. Our custom furniture program covers single prototypes through full production runs.

Luxury pool lounge chairs

Our outdoor lounge chairs are built for poolside, patio, and garden use. We use teak, ipe, and other weather-resistant hardwoods with marine-grade finishes that handle sun, rain, and temperature swings. Outdoor upholstery is available in Sunbrella and other solution-dyed fabrics rated for UV and moisture exposure.

Upholstery

Upholstery options include leather, velvet, linen, wool, cotton, and performance fabrics. We work with COM (customer’s own material) or our in-house library. Padding density, stitching style, and welt details are all customizable. For commercial projects, we specify fabrics that meet fire-retardant and double-rub requirements.

Armchair Styles

We build armchairs across a range of styles, from Art Deco to mid-century modern to contemporary. Each type can be customized in dimensions, materials, and upholstery. Here are the formats we work with most often.

Wingback chairs

Originally designed to block drafts, the wingback has become a fixture of both traditional and contemporary interiors. We build them in solid hardwood frames with full upholstery, customizable in wing height, seat depth, and leg style.

Club chairs

A staple of hotel lobbies and corporate lounges, club chairs offer deep seats and low profiles. We customize proportions, cushion firmness, and upholstery to match the setting.

Barrel chairs

This round armchair with a semi-circular back is an indispensable addition to many interior hospitality layouts. Appealing to minimalist and transitional décor alike, these contemporary armchairs look excellent in both fabric and leather, offering streamlined elegance and symmetrical beauty.

Lawson chairs

Exploring the line between traditional chairs and contemporary armchairs, the Lawson model is a spacious, comfortable design that opens up the layout even further. Ideal for the dining area, this armchair provides a perfectly comfortable experience, finding balance through a joyful exploration of shape, material, and support.

Chesterfield chairs

The Chesterfield features deep-button tufting and rolled arms, traditionally in leather but also available in fabric. We customize proportions, tufting depth, and arm width for residential and commercial settings.

Swivel chairs and rocking chairs

Swivel bases are available in metal or wood, with 360-degree rotation. We have built swivel and rocking lounge chairs for hotel lobbies, corporate lounges, and private residences.

Outdoor armchairs

Our armchair designs can be adapted for outdoor use with weather-resistant hardwoods and marine-grade fabrics. Available as standalone pieces or as part of a coordinated outdoor dining set.
