Refuge. Sanctuary. Home.
“It is possible in this time to create an oasis that buffers, as we build the changes that betters our future.”
In this era, one hopes for sanctuary, longs for refuge and even escape. It is possible in this time to create an oasis that buffers, as we build the changes that betters our future. To create a refuge is to build metaphorical muscle, mindful stamina, jujutsu for the long journey forward.
To buffer oneself is not an act of indifference, but an effort of self preservation and longevity in visioning the long road ahead. A means to preserve and persevere. To build a sanctuary is not a walling off, but a building up, a fortification of immunity, supplementing mind and body. Ones home can be seen as a sacred space, emphasizing the sacredness of the personal, or simply of space itself, most likely a combination of both. Walls are metaphorical and physical, giving us a sense of security and defining boundaries, holding in and keeping out.
“The making of a good building, the harmonious building, one adapted to its purposes and to life, [is] a blessing to life and a gracious element added to life, is a great moral performance.”
– FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT, 1955
A refuge can mean a neighborhood, a family of few, a house in the woods, a room for one. It is all in the building, all in how one sees it, what we surround ourselves with and whom.
