SENTIENT Live Edge Tables
“Good design is not void of craftsmanship nor separate from those whose hands create it, this is a symbiotic approach, from the mind of the creator to the heart of the maker.”
Craftsmanship is a centuries old approach to making and expressing, a time honored and deeply knowledgeable way of making. Historically, the artisan was a backbone to their community, offering goods and services that could not otherwise be found. This is still the case, though manufacturing has broadened the scope of furniture making, community based craftsmanship still thrives, based on our innate need and draw to beauty and the hand created.
It is here that SENTIENT thrives, where our craftsmanship and heirloom quality stands firm in the belief of good design, the love of making and the community that it supports. Good design is not void of craftsmanship nor separate from those whose hands create it, this is a symbiotic approach, from the mind of the creator to the heart of the maker. Here is a historic lineage of making, a layering of quality materials, technical knowledge and a passion for beauty, a desire, if not need to make.
Our Signature Live Edge tables embody the history of craftsmanship, each slab is selected from a sustainable wood source in Philadelphia, where the logs are sliced, kiln dried and further air dried both there and at our workroom in Brooklyn. After the drying process the slabs are then honed, sanded, pieced and then finished, all by hand. It is an important factor that the wood we use is sustainable and acquired through reputable sources. Most of the hardwoods we source include, but not limited to, American black walnut, maples, oak, and Paroda which is a hard wood we acquire from Mexico. These hard woods have beautiful grains, American black walnut in particular, rarely receives a stain so that the grain shows prominent. Maple, especially Ambrosia Maple has a distinctive graining brought on by a natural fungal, its a light wood that takes stain well but shines beautifully with just a water based sealer.
A Live Edge table can be used not only as a dinning table, but as a books table, entry table or desk, both small or large, though the longer and wider the table the base needs to be metal, we offer numerous bases with several finishes such as blackened, bronzed and brass and a square wood frame to match the tabletop itself. Our bases are Frame legs, Canted Legs, Wishbone Legs and V-Shaped Legs, this depends on your personal style of traditional or modern. Live edge tables add a warm natural softness to a minimalist or modern space and a greater sense of romance and history to a more traditional decor. Used in restaurants Live Edge tables add character to an otherwise restrained and utilitarian setting that requires maximum seating capacity and durability.
Through craftsmanship, design and quality materials SENTIENT continues to bring beauty to the lives of our clients, to bolster, uplift and otherwise inspire. It is our honor, if not our privilege to provide for our communities both in our neighborhood, across this great continent and abroad.
