Separated at Birth? Kara Walker's Domino Sugar Sphinx + Airlander 10
Two years ago, I walked into a vast & empty warehouse that once was part of the sprawling Dominio Sugar Factory in Williamsburg (torn down since to make way for monstrous condos named after the historic facility) to view artist Kara Walker's project with Creative Time, affectionately called the 'Sugar Sphinx'
Fast forward to last week, when the world's largest airship dubbed 'the flying bum' took its maiden flight: the two massive projects are strikingly similar … when viewed from a certain angle. Now obviously, this is just a trick of the camera and perspective (not to mention the sheer massive engineering feat that the airship represents, nor the deeply resounding meaning behind Walker's work), but I thought it was a good rumination on design, art & the human form.
Now that you're aware of these two projects, you can view a video of Kara Walker's "A Subtlety" which discusses the link between sugar plantations and the rise of the Domino Sugar Company
And you can watch the massive Airship 10 slowly crash into the English countryside below.
